Poultry House Plans For 10 Chickens
If you want a poultry house (or coop) for 10 chickens then you are looking for a large sized chicken coop. As a rule of thumb it is recommended that at least 4 square feet of space be provided so that the chicken may live comfortably within the coop. Thus if your poultry comprises of (or over) 10 birds then you must offer at least 40 square feet of space to them. This does not end here. When making a large sized poultry house a few things must be kept in mind at all times.
a. Your backyard: Can it support a structure of over 40 square feet? Although this will not be a problem in the country, in a city however it is a totally different ball game. Remember that a large size chicken coop is fixed and cannot be moved; if your backyard cannot support such an endeavor then it is best to down size your poultry (or move to a new house!).
b. Your budget: You will need at least 150 to 200 dollars to make one of these. Although cheaper alternatives are present since your poultry is 10 chickens big you have little choice here.
c. Accessories: A poultry house has to come equipped with all the bells and whistles; this includes waterers, feeders, insulation against foul weather (like cold drafts) and needs to have its floor covered with either sand or saw dust as chickens love taking sand baths.
d. Protection from predators: A very menacing problem that poultry farmers face. Your coop must protect the birds from any outside intrusion what-so-ever, either land or air based.
e. Protection from climate: The poultry house must be designed keeping the weather in mind. For instance if it is cold then proper insulation needs to be provided, if the climate is hot then proper window placement so that cross-air ventilation is permitted or if it is rainy then you should consider putting the coop on stilts.
f. The Chicken Run: A very important addition as this allows the chickens to roam outside while keeping them both confined and safe from predators.
